Project Beyond Blue is an online community for persons with treatment-resistantDEPRESSION and other chronic mood disorders, as well as their families and friends who want to better understand them. Its purpose is to offer support and hope to people whose conditions are lasting or difficult to treat, those who often fall through the cracks of today’s healthcare system.
It began with a desperate attempt to soften the bitterness that was accumulating in my heart after fighting loud death thoughts (“I wish I were dead”) for six years. Having exhausted almost every treatment offered by both the medical world (more than 50 medication combinations, years of psychotherapy) and holistic world (supplements, meditation, specific DIETS, acupuncture, yoga), I wondered how I would be able to endure another 40-plus years with such a strong desire to die.
Drawing on the wisdom of my heroes-- Mother Teresa and renowned psychiatrist Viktor Frankl -- I tried to turn my pain into service, to connect with other people experiencing the same debilitating thoughts, and to see whether it was possible to transcend my own suffering by lifting someone else from darkness.
Group Beyond Blue was conceived on Facebook in May of 2014. By October, the group had grown to over 2,000 members. I decided the powerful healing network deserved a home independent of Facebook, where members could create small groups within a site and SHARE blogs, photos, and videos with each other. Project Beyond Blue was launched December 24, 2014 and has been growing every day since!
Together there is hope!
